IT'S AUCTION TIME AGAIN Those who attend the Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church's annual auction know that it's an event to not be missed. Not only are there bargains galore in the silent auction that precedes the regular auction, but delicious baked goods as well. Saturday, November 18th at 5 pm, the youth of the church offer a delicious dinner of chili or soup, during which time you can also browse the silent auction items and place your bids. A free will offering is taken for the meal, with the proceeds going to the youth group. At approximately 6:30 pm, the silent bidding will cease and Kirk Morehead will conduct the fun, live auction. Not only are there items you can carry home, there are also service items such as leaf raking, garage cleaning and baby sitting. You may even find an offer for dinner or a vacation spot. Striping the Roads
Posted on: 2007-08-02
Striping the yellow line down the middle of the roads is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2007. However, if it rains or the company is delayed somewhere, we may still be waiting for striping. Striping consists of painting the yellow stripe down the center of our roads. To do that, the painting machine is lined up along the white side lines to correctly paint down the center in a straight line. If a car, truck, boat, dumpster, or anything else is sitting on the white line and covering up a section of that line, then the machine cannot continue to smoothly paint down the center. That “stop and start again” process only prolongs the painting time and can create a blank spot or a wiggle in the yellow line. That spot, for more than a year, will clearly identify an owner who failed to move their vehicles on the day of painting. If the striping is not yet done, PLEASE DO NOT PARK OR PLACE ANYTHING OVER THE WHITE SIDE LINES ON THE DAY OF STRIPING. Remind your contractors that they also must keep their vehicles off the white lines. Those center yellow lines are needed to assist drivers on our roads and make it safe to drive around the lake.

Water Testing
Posted on: 2005-08-18
August 18, 2005 To : Owner/Members of Lake Lotawana Association
From : Board of Directors
Re : Water Testing
Dear Owner/Members;
As you are aware the Lake Lotawana Association tests the water in each of the coves on a recurring basis through a reputable water testing facility. It is through these tests the Association has learned of the high counts of Fecal Coliforms in Big Rock Bay. It is believed that these results are due, in large part, to the dredging activity currently taking place in your cove in combination with the recent heat wave of the past weeks. Presently, we are disallowing swimming in Big Rock Bay until the test results indicate this problem has been cleared up. We will do testing on a weekly basis beginning Monday, August 22nd.
It has been the intent of the Association to keep you informed of the ongoing status of test results. It is important for you to note that the when the most recent results for Big Rock Bay came in we immediately retested this cove. Both tests showed high counts and warrant the ban on swimming in this cove.
The Lake Lotawana Association will continue to keep all owner/members informed. Information will be provided on our website www.lakelotawananews.com as well as on Channel 7 and updated accordingly as we learn of any changes. It should be noted that this is not uncommon during hot summer weather and should be handled as stated above. As always, should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Association office 578-4272.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors Lake Lotawana Association

Queen Lotawana contest is BACK!
Posted on: 2005-06-26
After years of the forgotten 'Queen Lotawana' contest, it has finally come back to bring us even more fun on our Lotawana Day on July 23rd ! This is how the contest goes . . . 1 nominee is chosen from each club in Lotawana [ex. Social Butterflies, Lotawana Softball (all ages are eligible) and etc.] , and after all the nominees are chosen a container is placed at Tom's Meat Market (located right outside of gate 2 on Colbern Rd.) and at Ron's Lotawana Spirits (located just north of Colbern on 7 Hwy). Each container will have a name on a nominee on it, and whoever raises the most money in her container is crowned Queen Lotawana. All the money is donated to Lake Lotawana. What a fun way to knock off a great Lotawana Day!

CHILI - SOUP SUPPER & AUCTION
Posted on: 2009-11-10
COME FOR SUPPER -- STAY FOR THE FUN! You can have a choice of chili or home made soup on Saturday, November 21st from 5 - 6:45 p.m. at the Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church at Gate 1. There will be a silent auction in progress as you enjoy your meal; then a live auction will follow at 6:45. This annual event always proves to be fun as bidding rises on Sue Mann's famous red velvet cake. There have been baskets of food, gift certificates from local merchants and also services such as garage cleaning and baby sitting offered in the past. While the baked goods always provide the most bidding wars, paintings by the late Bernard Martin also draw much attention. If you would like to offer an item for bid or have questions about the auction, call Elaine Raymond at 246-4313 or the church office at 578-4544.

CLICK IT OR TICKET
Posted on: 2006-05-07
Local Law Enforcement Participating in Click It or Ticket Campaign
Lake Lotawana, MO - The Lake Lotawana Police Department will be participating in the Click It or Ticket Campaign - a national enforcement effort to increase safety belt and child restraint use. The Missouri Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Division in cooperation with the national highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Missouri Safety Center awarded the Lake Lotawana Police Department a grant in the amount of $1,000.00 to assist in a national effort to enforce all traffic laws and increase safety belt and child restraint use. The enforcement effort will be conducted May 22 through June 4, 2006 and will be followed by a statewide safety belt usage survey. 'If we stop you for a traffic offense, and you're not buckled up, you will get a ticket. No exceptions. No excuses,' stated Chief Poletis. Over 70 percent of the drivers who die in motor vehicle crashes are not wearing a safety belt. The use of safety belts and child restraints is one of the best ways to prevent death and personal injury when involved in a traffic crash. Safety belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to people riding in the front seat of a passenger car by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent. For people riding in pickup trucks, safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent and moderate-to-critical injury by 65 percent. 'Missouri is serious,' said Leanna Depue, director of highway safety for the Missouri Department of Transportation. 'We are working together with local and state law enforcement agencies to safe lives. Simply wearing a safety belt can reduce your chances of being killed or injured in a motor vehicle crash.'

The following information regarding a proposed Wal-Mart Super Center to be located NE of the Colbern Road and Hwy 7 intersection was provided by Carrie Thum, Senior Manager of Public Affairs for Wal-Mart Headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas: The site is 'under consideration. No final determination has been made. We have not closed on any property. We are working through the entitlement phase of the process. We have a final meeting coming up in the near future. We have not closed on any land so legally we have no immediate plans. We have to wait for the entitlement process to be over.' Ms. Thum referred me to the site plan for specific information on the square footage. When asked about numbers of employees, she said Super Centers usually employ 'between 300 and 500 people.'

PROPOSED WAL-MART SUPER CENTER
Posted on: 2006-07-10
The Chapman Farms site plan, including the proposed Wal-Mart Super Center at the intersection of 7 and Colbern, can be seen at the Blue Springs Community Development office located in the annex just behind Blue Springs City Hall at 903 W. Main. The original site plan called for two detention basins at the proposed location. An additional detention basin, next to Temp Stop, will be added by Wal-Mart. It is “required to be landscaped—not just a hole in the ground with water,” according to Blue Springs Community Development staff. Many changes are occurring in the Chapman Farms site plan. More information on the development will be in the next Lotawana News. Blue Springs Planning Commission meetings are open to the public and are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, July 12, Wal-Mart is scheduled to ask the Planning Commission for a variance for their site plan not to expire in a year.

Wal-Mart Opponents to Meet
Posted on: 2006-09-25
Are you willing to be active in an advocacy campaign to stop the proposed Wal-Mart Super store at 7 and Colbern? If so.... Meet with other concerned citizens Neighbors Unite Saturday, October 14th at 10:30 a.m. VFW - next to Community Club- Gate 1 This one-hour session will have the goals of identifying needed working groups to help stop Wal-Mart's proposed store, breaking up into these small groups, and starting the dialogue among ourselves to create a successful strategy to stop Wal-Mart. Others across the country have been successful. There is no reason we cannot be.
Visit these websites: www.walmartwatch.com and www.wakeupwalmart.com (Go to community fights.) There you will see proven organizing strategies. We do not need to reinvent the wheel. We just need for neighbors to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, each take some responsibility, and help to preserve our unique environment. The people coordinating this initial meeting are not in a position to offer leadership for this campaign. Before attending the meeting, figure out how much time you have available to spend on something this important to the future of our community. Together, even as busy people, we can accomplish a lot!
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

Don't Let Intruders in Easy, if you Own a Security System, Use It!
Posted on: 2008-12-11
As the holidays grow close, the theft rate increases. Especially with the slow economy, burglars are finding more ways to break into cars, businesses and houses. There is a proactive approach to help prevent theft, or at least make it more difficult for burglars to steal your possessions. One method is to simply turn on your security system. Todd Harrison, Operations Manager at Atronic Alarms, Inc. in Lenexa, Kansas, says that many people will not arm their system as they are running out of the door to go to work or just head out for a couple of hours. “It is important during the holiday season, and especially during these difficult economic times, that if you own an alarm system, you use it!” Todd says. “Many times if the sign itself doesn’t deter a thief, the alarm sounding inside the home will. But if you don’t arm your system, it can’t do its job. My system is always turned on, even when we are in bed at night. Being in this business for over 16 years I have dealt with too many clients that have had horrible experiences.”
More than half of residential burglaries occur in the daytime because many people are away from home. The National Burglary and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) says that you shouldn’t invite burglars in from the street with a tempting display of gifts that can be seen through the window. Residents should also create a “I’m Home” ambiance by leaving inside lights on at a low setting. Lights automatically turning “on” and “off” during the day is a strong deterrent, and can be set with a home automation lighting system or timers purchased at your local hardware stores. Are you vacationing for the holidays? Below are tips you might remember to help keep your home safe: 1. As mentioned above, give your home a “lived in” look by using lighting systems turning your lights on and off during the day and into the evening. 2. Leave on a radio or television during the day 3. Ask for help from a neighbor or friend to “house sit” your home by checking on the place once a day to pick up mail and newspapers. 4. Have a neighbor take out your trash on trash day and bring the trash cans back in. 5. Leave drapes and shades open 6. Replace all your burned out yard lights and install outside lighted motion detectors 7. Keep bushes and trees trimmed back to prevent “hiding” areas. 8. If you have a security system, ALWAY notify your alarm company to let them know you will be gone and who they should contact if case of an alarm. Some security systems will even allow you remote access via the internet to change the homes environment while away.
For more information on holiday safety, contact Atronic Alarms at 913.362.0000, visit the website a www.atronicalarms.com, or visit the NBFAA web site at www.alarm.org. Atronic Alarms has been a Kansas City leader in the security, fire and home automation industry since 1982.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Posted on: 2008-04-07
The Campaign for Lotawana needs your help. Over the weekend of May 2-4, we would like to drop information letters and donor envelopes at every house on the lake. It sounds like a huge job, but if we have lots of help, it shouldn't take very long at all. If you could donate an hour of your time over the weekend, please call Sharon Morash at 578-4690 or email at sharonmorash@comcast.net. It is clean-up weekend and community garage sale on Saturday, so there should be lots of people around. This is another great way to show what a unique and involved community we have.

Atronic Alarms Attends Crime Stoppers Event
Posted on: 2008-11-06
Staff of Atronic Alarms Pulls Out Wallets To Support Crime Stoppers Representatives of the Lenexa based security company, Atronic Alarms, Inc., gathered Saturday night, November 1, 2008, at the Pavilion in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium to support the Crime Stoppers 12th Annual Tent Event Fundraiser. The fundraiser, put on by Crime Stoppers and the KC Chiefs Ambassadors, brings businesses together to benefit the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline and the Crime Stoppers Student Scholarship Program. Todd Harrision, operation’s manager at Atronic Alarms, said that Atronic has always supported the not-for-profit organization’s ideals but this was the first year Atronic increased their efforts by sponsoring a table, donating a GPS unit and participating in the event. “A large part of our company’s success comes from keeping people safe and informed,” said Harrison . “This is done by not only providing security systems and 24-hour monitoring, but by showing support to organizations such as Crime Stoppers who all work in a network of awareness trying to make our community a safer place for our families and employees to live. I am very proud we were able to participate this year.” Harrison, along with several other coworkers, personally bid on items in the auction and silent auction during the evening. Those that attended the event to represent Atronic Alarms were Todd Harrison, Jason Rothove, Shaunn Jastrzembski, Wes Cowsert, Curtis Mayes , Rick Zink and Megan Ragan. For more information, please contact Todd Harrison at 913.362.0000. ANIMAL CONTROL COVERAGE
Posted on: 2008-09-08
CITY OF LAKE LOTAWANA As one of many collaborative efforts the city has undertaken, a recently completed agreement with the City of Blue Springs will enable animal control services for residents to be continued during Officer Jeffrey’s extended absence as he attends the Police Academy and in spite of budgetary constraints.
This service will begin on September 15, 2008.
If a resident has an animal control issue, they should call the Lotawana Police number 816.578.4333 as usual. The initial response will most likely be by a police officer, with the Blue Springs animal control services limited mostly to transporting animals, either to the vet or a shelter, depending on circumstances.
As is the case now, the city will not trap wildlife or other animals, but has cages available for residents who request them.
Officer Jeffrey will be available in the evenings and on weekends as he has currently been.
Animal Control is the first of a number of services in which the city will be collaborating with other organizations to endeavor to provide the professionalism and responsiveness residents expect in spite of staffing and financial challenges.
